Edgbaston Arts Champions Project – 2008
Town Hall & Symphony Hall (THSH) and DanceXchange (dx) have had the pleasure of working with Edgbaston residents to create a dance film with an original soundtrack as part of the Birmingham City Council funded Arts Champions Programme. The two city-centre arts organisations have been working in partnership with The Quinzone Centre and an intergenerational group of people who attend the centre in order to the meet the goal of Arts Champions: “to let Birmingham residents get closer to the city’s world-class offerings.” Over two and half months, the group learned about making music (both live and computer produced), photography, filming, editing, and dance, and the finished film, “2 Parts of Life” premiered at The Electric Cinema on 17th May 2008 to an enthusiastic audience. The resulting film, which explores Edgbaston through the years and what it means to the participants to be from Edgbaston, features pictures and memories of the community in years past, glow in the dark dancers, emceeing, animation, original music, and much more. As the project tied in so well with a nation wide project being run by Birmingham City Council, Portrait of a Nation which offers young people a chance to “explore and express what is special to them about where they come from, their local culture, community and identity” the group was lucky enough to receive some additional funding (Heritage Lottery Fund) that went towards supporting the group’s experience and making the film even more exciting!
“After not having a clue what we’d let ourselves in for, I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been brilliant. It’s something I’ve never done before.“ Wendy, adult participant
“I came because my friend told me it would be good and it was really good.“ Dan, young person involved
*THSH and DanceXchange would like to thank everyone involved for making this a fantastic project.

Science of Sound Project
Between December 2007 to February 2008, two local primary schools have taken part in an exciting cross-curricular project about the ‘Science of Sound’. Using the resources of Town Hall and Symphony Hall, the ‘Science of Sound Project’ has explored how sound is made, how it travels and how we hear.
Children from Moor Green Primary School and Nelson Primary School began the project with a visit to both venues. Organ Animateur Daniel Moult introduced the children to how sound is made using the Symphony Hall Pipe Organ and demonstration pipes. The many acoustic features at Symphony Hall were then introduced to reveal how they alter the way that sound travels around the auditorium. Carlos Munoz Villalobos from Caliche then introduced the children to South American Music and explored how the pan-pipes are similar to the Pipe Organ.
Following the visit to Town Hall and Symphony Hall, workshops were held in each of the schools where the children explored the topic further. Over the 6 weeks of workshops the children have explored Music, Science, Maths and Design Technology – from tuning instruments, analysing sound waves to making pan-pipes.
The project concluded with an open workshop at Symphony Hall where the children performed the musical pieces to family and friends.
Over the next couple of months, resources linked to this project will be available to download from this website…watch this space!
Many thanks to everyone involved.
Phase 2 of this project will be taking place in September 2008, if you would like more information about this project please email education@thsh.co.uk.
