The story of one man’s journey from this world to the next, The Dream of Gerontius never fails to sweep audiences away with its operatic immediacy. Originally premiered in Town Hall as a commission for the 1900 Birmingham Festival, these performances will be the first period-instrument rendition of Gerontius that return to the score as Elgar conceived it.

BBC Music magazine’s Editor Oliver Condy explains why he has recommended tonight’s concert: “To hear Elgar’s undisputed masterpiece performed ‘at home’ by such distinguished musicians is a rare treat. Gerontius will surely be one of Birmingham’s autumn highlights.”
